for the love of turtles

Fishes - 25000 species

Birds - 10,000 living species

Cockroaches - 4,000 species

Snakes - 2,900 species

Monkeys - 264 species

And turtles...

Only about 7 living species left...

WHY SUCH A SMALL NUMBER COMPARED TO THE REST?

Truth to be told, most of us do not know that turtles are listed as "Endangered/Critically Endangered Species" in the IUCN Red List. Each day, the turtles population continue to face various threats posed by humans, such as commercial fishing, entanglement on fishing nets, ingesting marine debris, loss of nesting habitat and so on...

Find out more about these gentle and beautiful creatures and what we can do to help their survival before they become just a picture in the museum. And when our grandchildren start to ask why turtles aren't around anymore, could we just say that we just didn't bothered when they are still around? Or is there something we can do today to make sure that this species survives?

HOW?

Well, just tune into the Turtle Blogathon that is going to be held on the 25th October 2009!

A Turtle Blogathon is an event where the dedicated people of the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) will blog non-stop for 24 hours, about matters relating to marine and freshwater turtles. What they do is that they stay the entire night - just doing research, write and publish one blog post every hour, all around the clock! And for staying up all night, they collect donations for TCC's future initiatives and projects.

WHEN?

The Turtle Blogathon will begin at 9 pm on October 25th and end at 9 pm on October 26th, 2009 (Malaysian time, GMT +0800).

HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

Email your turtle-related questions to TCC at cp@turtleconservationcentre.org anytime between now and the 25th of October and please include your name/nickname/screen name and your website/blog URL. You can ask them just about anything about marine and freshwater turtles (turtle biology, their roles in the ecosystem, the threats that they face, importance of conserving them... etc!) - as many questions as you can possibly think of ;)

Meanwhile, you can also join in the Turtle Blogathon Facebook event as we wait for it to kick off in another week's time.

So what are you waiting for?? Get involved now and save the turtles!
